General Sandhu retired from the Indian army after 34 years of service and is now devoting his time to various charitable initiatives. Previously, he was CEO of Help Age India. He is Chair of South Asian Fundraising Group, a consultant for Oxfam GB and a consultant, speaker and trainer at international fundraising conferences. He is also a senior consultant at Barakelye Management and Fundraising Consultants, Asia. He is on a number of governing boards and advises many not for profit organisations in South Asia.
Bina Rani is the Chief Executive of iParnter India (previously known as Connect for Change), an organisation working with Asian Diaspora in the UK. She was also the Founder Director of the Asian Foundation for Philanthropy and set up the Charities Aid Foundation in India. Having worked in the voluntary sector for many years across three continents, she has accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge that Kusuma is able to tap into.
David is an independent consultant working with charities, companies and the government on the funding and governance of charities and social enterprises and on the promotion of personal philanthropy. His clients have included the UK Treasury, several Private Bank Philanthropy Advisory Services, the first Venture Philanthropy ‘pooled’ fund in the UK, the European Foundation Centre and many endowed and corporate foundations. He has a governance training joint venture (‘On Board’) with the UK’s leading charity law firm. David also works as a ‘mentor/adviser’ for senior staff of several charities. He has been Chief Executive of three foundations including The Baring Foundation (1992-8). He is a member of the Supervisory Board of Triodos Bank NV. He is a founder Director of the Trust that publishes the journal Alliance. He has been a Trustee of several other charities including, until recently, the National Foundation for Youth Music, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and engage (the association of people working in gallery education). He is a member of the Social Investment Task Force and the Commission on Unclaimed Assets and chairs the editorial group of the Philanthropy UK e-newsletter.
A Harvard, Princeton and LSE graduate, Jean-Paul is Reader in the Political Economy of Development at the Development Studies Institute, London School of Economics, where he is also the Programme Director for the MSc in Development Management. He chairs the Decentralisation Task Force at Columbia University's “Initiative for Policy Dialogue”. He has published extensively in the academic literature, including a recently completed book Governance from Below: Decentralization and Popular Democracy in Bolivia. His teaching and research focus on comparative political economy, new institutional economics, and development economics. He previously worked for the World Bank as an economist and social sectors expert in Bolivia, and still acts as an external adviser to the World Bank, IDB, and other development organisations.
Hazel Slavin is a Health Promotion and Communications specialist. She has an MSc in Health Education, an MA in Social Anthropology and two post graduate Diplomas, one in Education and the other in Human Sexuality. Hazel taught in Further Education for eight years and was then seconded to the Inner London Education Authority as an Advisory Teacher after working on a Schools Council curriculum development project. She was Principal lecturer in Heath Promotion at South Bank University London before moving to free-lance work in developing countries. She is Chair of the Trustees of Women and Children First, a small charity working to improve maternal and newborn health.
