We are delighted to award a grant of nearly £300K to support the creation of a fellowship position to carry out cardiac research at the University of Cambridge in Professor Sanjay Sinha’s lab.
Although many tens of thousands of patients with severe heart failure could benefit from a heart transplant, only ~ 200 transplants are carried out per year in the UK due to a shortage of good donor organs. New ways to repair the heart and to test these therapies are urgently needed.
Building on Cambridge’s world-leading expertise in ex situ heart perfusion, the research project will examine ways to increase the healthy perfusion time of hearts donated after circulatory death. This work could lead to the potential increase in the availability of donor hearts for transplantation, increase the options for research and improve outcomes for patients with severe heart failure.
We wish the Cambridge research team the very best with this innovative project!
