We were proud to attend the soft launch of Global Generation’s new permanent Story Garden this July. With a landmark long-term lease, Global Generation transformed a former brownfield landscape into community garden and educational space in zone one. Having supported this project throughout its two-year journey, it was truly inspiring to walk through the finished site and to hear powerful poetry from the young trainees who gained vital green skills during the construction.

The Story Garden’s three primary buildings incorporate a mix of  bio-based materials and circular economy waste. The classroom is built using locally sourced clay from a building excavation in Kings Cross. The Community Kitchen is clad with 12,000 handmade chestnut shakes, which were crafted by volunteers using coppiced timber sourced from Sussex woodlands. The office was constructed using 2,000 traditional handmade bricks.

With construction complete, the garden development is now underway, creating a thriving nature corridor and habitat for plants and wildlife. The garden aims to showcase ways for the local community to be more resilient to climate change and foster greater care and stewardship of the natural world, with the new site acting as an educational hub for local people to gain new skills. The demonstrator garden has a range of habitats and growing areas to highlight what is possible in a small urban footprint

Congratulations to the Global Generation team! We look forward to seeing the Story Garden thrive.
