In September a grant of £49,132 was awarded to the Serpentine Gallery to go towards their Amar Kanwar Exhibition. Amar Kanwar is a New Delhi-based artist and filmmaker. He has developed multi-media installations that include documentary, travelogue and visual essays to explore the Indian subcontinent.
The exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery is a major solo exhibition of new and existing works by Kanwar. The exhibition opened on 22 September and it has completely transformed the Serpentine Gallery. You enter into darkness and it takes a moment to adjust to the lighting and installations. The exhibition includes Such a Morning, which is a feature-length fictional parable that focuses on truth and darkness and The Peacock’s Graveyard, which has seven screens and is a visual tapestry of fables, which is presented in London for the first time. The exhibition also premiered a new seven-screen film installation, The Charcoal Man, which explores fact, fantasy and fiction around the history of India. Alongside the exhibition there will be education sessions, curator talks and relaxed hours.
The exhibition is free and will run until 31 January 2027. We encourage people to go and explore the exhibition and the unique space that has been created at The Serpentine.
