Upskilling the healthcare workforce in Gibraltar

Simulation plays a vital part in training health and social care professionals, providing an opportunity to practise clinical skills in a safe environment.

The School of Health Sciences at the University of Gibraltar is improving and expanding its simulation suite, so that it replicates a local hospital ward. By offering a realistic and immersive learning environment, the suite will help build students’ confidence, knowledge, and understanding. Practising in the suite will make it less stressful when they experience situations with actual patients for the first time.

  • The University of Gibraltar opened its doors in 2015, with the first BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing launched in 2020.
  • The new simulation suite will benefit around 160 students at the University of Gibraltar’s School of Health Sciences.
  • Their current simulation suite has 4 beds; the new one will have 6 – 3 for adults, 1 for a child, and 2 for high dependency patients

Responding to patients’ needs

We’re helping to fund the University of Gibraltar’s new simulation suite with a grant of £200,000. Each of the 6 bed spaces will have simulated oxygen and suction, nurse call buttons, emergency buzzers, name boards and bed lights, and all clinical equipment found in a Gibraltar hospital ward.

The suite provides health and social care students with their first taste of responding to patients’ needs and prepares them thoroughly for the real-world placements that are a critical part of their study programme.
The courses that will benefit from the suite include Access to Healthcare, Diploma in Nursing, BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing, BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing, BSc (Hons) Paramedic Practice, MSc Contemporary Healthcare, and MSc Advanced Healthcare Practitioner.

“The Kusuma Trust’s generous donation has enabled us to create a state-of-the-art healthcare training facility on the second floor of our North Wing, featuring a six-bedded simulation suite, treatment rooms, and dedicated classrooms. This space provides students with a safe, immersive environment where they can develop essential clinical skills before stepping into real-world healthcare settings. Their support has strengthened healthcare education in Gibraltar and will have a lasting impact on the industries and communities we serve.”
